Explain how your experience affected you as a person
As a person my experience showed me the amount of work it takes to build something from scratch. It gave me a new respect for construction workers, and showed me this isn't what I want to do with my life so I better get a degree.
How did you change?
I Think that during the process I grew up a little bit. The building of the structure gave me valuable skills, and in doing so changed who I was. I changed from a person who was helpless when it came to carpentry, to someone who could take on another project like the this alone. I also changed in the sense that i was able to apply my engineering skills to a real world application.
How do you see the world differently as a result of your experience?
I see now that blue collar jobs such as construction are hard, and I have found a new respect for people who are able to perform those jobs day in and day out.
How did this experience impact or reveal your character?
During the experience my charecter was impacted from the constant working and not stopping. It impacted my character in a positive way, by revealing that in a job like this there are no breaks, and that if you want to finish on time you must work every moment you can.
Was this a meaningful experience? why or why not?
Yes this was a meaningful experience. Not only did I get to work hard with my soul life inspiration, but at the end I got to put down my tool belt and stand back and admire the work I had put in to build a beautiful structure. Also I learned many valuable skills I can use in the future life. This experience also gave me the opportunity to put the skills learned in engineering to use, by creating sketches and designs. Also I got to use mathematics to find angles and measurements needed to complete the engineering designs. I have never had these type of opportunities to put my skills to the test in a real world scenario. So yes it was meaningful.
What new knowledge or skills did you learn from this experience?
During the process my dad taught me everything he could. He taught me how to sand boards and how to properly set a nail. He taught me how to sheet metal and cut plywood. He taught me how to think outside the box when it was needed to help complete part of the structure. My father taught me many valuable life skills when it comes to carpentry, and showed me that a degree is worth it so you don't have to be doing construction for the rest of your life. Also i learned that things don't always turn out how you want them too. We followed the design as best as possible but did have to make some on the fly adjustments.
What would you do differently if you were to start over?
If I were able to start over I would change the season in which we did the project from winter to summer. It was very cold during the entire project.
